Yan Kit Village Chinese Temple traces its beginnings to 1939, when it was established as a shrine by residents of the former Yan Kit Village. The village was formerly located near the 11½ milestone of Changi Road and was home to many Hainanese residents.
Many villagers worked as sailors, fishermen or in trades connected to the sea. For this community, Shui Wei Sheng Niang 水尾圣娘 was revered as a protective deity who watched over those who travelled by water and those who depended on the sea for their livelihood.
Today, the temple continues this Hainanese spiritual heritage at 130 Mariam Way, welcoming devotees and visitors who wish to pray, seek blessings and learn about a living Chinese temple tradition in Singapore.

Shui Wei Sheng Niang is a sea-protecting deity deeply revered by the Hainanese community. Her worship is associated with protection, safe journeys, peace, family wellbeing and blessings.
According to temple tradition and oral history, the worship of Shui Wei Sheng Niang was introduced to Singapore in the 1930s by migrants from Wenchang, Hainan. As Hainanese communities settled in Singapore, they continued to honour her through prayers, offerings, festivals and temple worship.
